HVLP Equipment Values: An Overview

Each year, Bill Boxer, Chief Operating Officer of Apollo Sprayers is delighted to be the guest speaker at The Long Island Woodworkers Club. On August 5, 2009 Bill met with over 100 members to discuss what’s new in HVLP.

We all know that this past year has been difficult for some businesses. Several of the companies manufacturing HVLP Spray Systems have been affected and the result is that the HVLP choices have narrowed for the potential buyer. Rather than just talk about the virtues of the Apollo Systems, which are familiar to the Long Island Woodworkers, Bill chose to discuss how less expensive systems are manufactured. Bill stated that there certainly is a place for the less expensive machine but the finishers needs to understand some basic facts:

There are many motors available to manufacturers. Less expensive motors generally provide lower pressure. This works fine for some coatings, but limits the number of choices of coatings that the woodworker can use. Motor longevity can also be an issue.
A shorter, less flexible hose can be used to compensate for lower pressure. The shorter hose must be attached at the top of the gun rather than at the bottom of the handle – which is the comfortable configuration many finishers have grown used to.
Hose connections on less expensive machines often are not quick connects, but are simply a push-in friction fit.
Internal fluid components are often made from materials that can be subject to corrosion and may not last as long as those in more expensive machines.
A gun designed for a lower price point may offer less precision.

Bill pointed out that “just as with all the other tools that a woodworker buys, there are price choices. Choices are driven by short term budget and long term needs.“ Like every other tool, Bill believes that a woodworker should buy the best machine he/she can afford that will fill his/her short and long term needs.

Introducing Our New National Sales Manager, Don Vargo, Jr.

In July Apollo Sprayers appointed Don Vargo, Jr. National Sales Manager. Don brings our company his 25 years of expertise in paint and spray equipment. He has first-hand knowledge of all types of sprayers including airless, air assisted airless, and conventional high pressure spray guns. Don is convinced that High Volume Low Pressure turbines and spray guns is the best solution for almost all finishing situations and he is excited to focus on our broad array of precision HVLP products.

Don has deep experience in a variety of markets including, automotive, automotive repaint markets, body shops, automotive jobbers, industrial woodworking OEM, aerospace, marine and UV sunless tanning. He has held positions with top companies including ICI Paints, 3M Company, Accuspray and Sinclair Paints.
